CONGRESSIONAL AUGUST RECESS IS HERE!

USE THIS TIME TO BE AN EFFECTIVE
ACT! FOR AMERICA GRASSROOTS ADVOCATE

The U.S. House of Representatives has recessed for the month of August and the U.S. Senate is scheduled to do the same as of this Friday, August 7th.

During the August recess, most Members of Congress are back at home in their states and districts taking time to hear directly from their constituents. This contact often comes in the form of Town Hall Meetings or Tele-Town Hall Meetings. The annual summer recess is a perfect time to make contact with your elected officials to educate them about the threats of radical Islam and to provide them your views about matters under consideration in the U.S. Congress.

The Legislative Updates tab on the ACT! for America website, www.actforamerica.org, is designed to give you information you need for these meetings. On it, you will find our high priority legislative issues — legislation that will help protect our nation against the threats of radical Islam.

Specifically, what to do with the Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility and the terrorists currently held there is now under discussion by the administration and the U.S. Congress. An article in the August 3rd edition of The Washington Post stated that the “administration is considering whether to transfer some detainees at the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to a facility in the United States that would contain courtrooms to hold federal criminal trials and military commissions to prosecute terrorism suspects…” Further, the article states “officials said administration planners looking for one site for the facility have focused on the military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and a state maximum-security prison in Standish, Mich., that is scheduled to be closed.” In addition, Yahoo news has reported that the Obama Administration is also considering trying Guantanamo detainees in “big-city courtrooms in the nation's capital, New York and Virginia” as well as in the Midwest.

The Center for Security Policy, a 501(c) (3) organization has compiled detailed information on how your elected officials stand on this issue. Click HERE to identify your elected officials in the U.S. Congress, so you can look them up easily.


THE FOLLOWING ACTION IS NEEDED FROM YOU,
OUR ACT! FOR AMERICA GRASSROOTS ADVOCATE!

    • Call the local offices of your U.S. Representatives and Senators to learn when and where they plan to hold their August Town Hall Meetings. As a constituent, you are entitled to this information. Click HERE to identify your Members of Congress. If the date and/or time of a Town Hall Meeting is not convenient to you, arrange another time for you to meet with your elected official while he/she is back at home in August. Take other Chapter members with you!
       
    • When you visit with your Member of Congress, be sure to ask him/her to support ACT! for America’s high priority legislative issues as a cosponsor. If your Member of Congress has already done so, be sure to say “thanks!”
       
    • Review the Center for Security Policy’s Guantanamo Detention Facility reports (see above) to learn how your Members of Congress stand on the issue of closing the Guantanamo detention facility and where to transfer the terrorists currently kept there. If the report indicates that your elected official is not clear about this issue – or supports the transfer of detainees to U.S. soil – register your opposition!
