A Treasury Terrorism Designation…and a Curious Omission
Douglas Farah
The Treasury Department’s decision to designate the Union of Good for funding Hamas ( http://www.treas.gov/press/releases/hp1267.htm ) is welcome and overdue.
What is interesting, however, as noted by the Global Muslim Brotherhood Daily Report (free registration required) is that the designation does not directly touch Yousef al-Qaradawi, the head of the organization and the leading theologian for the Muslim Brotherhood. Here is his website, where he is listed with the Union of Good president ( http://web.archive.org/web/20071015165611/http:/insanonline.net/english/fnews/news.php?id=3 ). |

The Money Trail: Finding, Following, and Freezing Terrorist Finance

U.S. and international efforts to combat the financing of terrorism are an underappreciated and little-understood aspect of the global counterterrorism campaign. But since terrorist attacks are often inexpensive to mount -- the September 11 attacks were staged for less than $500,000 -- why should governments devote so much attention to tracking and severing the money trail for terrorism?
In this new Washington Institute Policy Focus, senior fellows Matthew Levitt and Michael Jacobson -- both former officials in the Treasury Department's Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, now with the Institute's Stein Program on Counterterrorism and Intelligence -- explore the critical role that money plays in the success of terrorist organizations, and why countering financial flows must be an integral part of the U.S. government's counterterrorism strategy. |

Islamist Watch Recommendation to the Minnesota Board of Education
Regarding the Status of Sponsors at Charter Schools
Last year, the Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy (TIZA) in Inver Grove Heights, MI raised controversy when a substitute teacher alleged that the publicly funded charter school was teaching Islam. Now, the Minnesota Education Trust (MET) is raising eyebrows by applying to be a sponsor of charter schools because its articles of incorporation state that one of its goals is "to promote the message of Islam to Muslims and non-Muslims and promote understanding between them."
TIZA was accused of leading students in Islamic prayer on Fridays and teaching Quranic classes after school everyday, among other religious practices, which violated the separation of church and state doctrine. Further investigation revealed that TIZA is housed at the headquarters of the Muslim American Society of Minnesota, along with a mosque. Its sponsor is Islamic Relief USA, a California-based organization, and TIZA's K-8 students are nearly all Muslim. In the end, some changes were made, but the school was not found to be in such gross violation as to have their funding or charter status taken away. |

Islamist Campus Group Gets ‘A+’ in Radicalism
The Muslim Students Association enjoys the support of many university administrators despite disturbing activities.
by Reut Cohen
The Investigative Project on Terrorism (IPT), a non-profit research organization founded by Steve Emerson, published a letter on the IPT website ( http://www.investigativeproject.org/article/797 ) which was written by a Muslim Students Association (MSA) member. The letter urges Muslims not to vote in elections this November. While an overwhelming number of Muslim-Americans supported Barack Obama, the MSA student suggested that both candidates are “kafir” and “poisonous.”
Farhad Akbari, the San Diego student, writes:
Whether you vote for the white kafir or the half-black kafir, they will kill our brothers and sisters. They will subjugate our brothers and sisters. And they will certainly support Israel in killing our brothers and sisters. There is no “lesser of two evils” here. They are both greater evils. The lesser evil is avoiding the situation, as both are equally poisonous to the cause of Islam. … Brothers and sisters, I have one thing to say: DON’T VOTE.
IPT accurately points out that these radical views are not anomalies, and are pervasive among various MSA chapters. |
