A judge in New York City considered sharia law and that Muslims in a foreign country who might violate sharia law by calling out an Americans name a determining factor in a case in a U.S. court. Wow.

Court Refuses Petition to Change Name to ChristIsKing (with a Special Bonus Sharia Reference).

From In re Nawadiuko, 2012 WL 4840800 (N.Y. City Civ. Ct. Oct. 1, 2012):

Currently before the court is an application by the Nwadiuko family to change their last names from Nwadiuko to “ChristIsKing” — one word with capital a C, I & K as the start of each internal word….

Interesting the petitioner parents were both born in Nigeria. Twelve Nigerian states have adopted Sharia law which does recognize blasphemy as a crime and has some severe punishments depending on the level of the blasphemy. If petitioners returned to an area of Nigeria enforcing Sharia law, members of the Islamic faith calling petitioners’ name in those areas might be committing blasphemy under Sharia law subjecting themselves to some degree of punishment. …

Professor Volokh concludes:

I think the concern about what might happen on petitioners’ travels in Nigeria is misplaced — American name change decisions ought not be influenced, I think, by other countries’ suppression of free speech and religious freedom.

So I think the court’s analysis, under the “interference with the rights of others” prong of the statute, is generally sound, though the worry about what Sharia law would do in Nigeria is not.

Every once-in-a-while a story emerges that distinguishes itself as too-good-to-be-true, but somehow — the facts seem to check out. Last October, TheBlaze reported on one of these uniquely bizarre stories when we brought you the details surrounding “Zombie Muhammad,” an atheist activist who was purportedly attacked by a Muslim during a Halloween parade in Pennsylvania.

While the assault was surprising enough in itself, the court battle that followed was equally unusual (it ended up being dismissed under curious circumstances). The crime was carried out by Talaag Elbayomy, a Muslim immigrant. According to numerous media accounts, the defendant didn‘t know that it’s perfectly legal to insult the prophet in America, so when he saw Ernest Perce V dressed in his Zombie Muhammad costume, he allegedly attempted to physically stop the presentation of anti-Islamic sentiment.

After Perce notified a police officer about what unfolded, the situation intensified. Charges were brought before Cumberland County Magisterial District Judge Mark Martin but, despite an admission at the scene of the crime by Elbayomy that he had grabbed Perce’s sign and pulled his beard, the judge inevitably dismissed the charges for lack of admissible evidence.

Today, Rep. Peter T. King  issued the following statement on the Obama Administration’s purchase of Thomson Prison in Illinois:

“After widespread and bipartisan opposition to President Obama’s outrageous and dangerous plan to close the ultra-secure detention facility at Guantanamo Bay and import the terrorists to the U.S. Homeland for trial in civilian courts in New York City and elsewhere, I thought this issue was settled.

“Apparently not.

“In order to keep these terrorists out of the United States, Congress reflected the will of the American people by explicitly opposing the purchase of the Thomson Illinois prison, where the Obama Administration has sought to transfer the Guantanamo terrorists.

“Yet, in direct defiance of the will of the People, the Administration today announced that it will buy the Thomson prison for at least $165 million.

“Obama Administration officials today promised that Guantanamo terrorists will not be transferred to the Thomson prison, citing Congressional action prohibiting it. I have trouble believing Obama Administration promises.

“If the Obama Administration is willing to ignore Congress about the purchase of the Thomson prison, how are the American people expected to trust that the

Administration will not ignore Congress about the transfer of terrorists into it? I pledge to continue working to keep the Obama Administration from moving dangerous terrorists from Guantanamo Bay to the U.S. Homeland.”

The Thomas More Law Center announced today that it is representing U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Dooley, a 1994 Graduate of the U. S. Military Academy at West Point.  In April 2012, LTC Dooley, a highly decorated combat veteran, was publically condemned by General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and relieved of his teaching assignment because of the negative way Islam was portrayed in an elective course entitled, Perspectives on Islam and Islamic Radicalism.

The actions against LTC Dooley, an instructor involved with this elective, follow a letter to the Department of Defense dated October 19, 2011 and signed by 57 Muslim organizations, demanding that all training materials that they judge to be offensive to Islam be “purged” and instructors “are effectively disciplined.”
