ACT for America supported and endorsed two pieces of legislation that addressed the issues of free speech and libel tourism:
H.R. 1304, the Free Speech Protection Act (Sponsor: Rep. Peter King)
Text of H.R. 1304
S. 449, the Free Speech Protection Act (Sponsor: Sen. Arlen Specter)
Text of S. 449
Background and Summary:
The legislation that was ultimately passed out of the U.S. Congress was a modified version of these two bills H.R. 2765, entitled, The “Security the Protection of Our Enduring and Established Constitutional Heritage (SPEECH) Act.” It was signed into law on August 10, 2010. The Act bars the enforcement of foreign judgments that do not meet U.S. free-speech standards. The act not only provides a national standard, as opposed to the prior patchwork of state legislation on the issue, but it also authorizes declaratory judgments in federal court and a number of other protections.
ACT for America has helped pass 84 national security-related bills in 32 states to protect this great nation.
American Laws for American Courts (ALAC) prohibits state judges from applying foreign law, which can include sharia law, when doing so infringes on constitutional rights.
