On January 6, 2026, Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-TX) introduced H.R. 6946 to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for individuals from Sudan, Syria, Yemen, Lebanon, and Somalia. Under this bill, those currently protected under TPS from these countries would be required to self-deport within 180 days of its passage.

In addition to the rampant fraud that has been uncovered in Minnesota, Maine, and Ohio (among others), Rep. Hunt stated that he was also motivated to introduce the bill as a way to prevent Sharia law from spreading in the United States. Hunt, a military veteran, stated, “As somebody that has lived under Sharia law, somebody that has deployed to the Middle East, this is also a broader conversation about keeping people that hate our country out of here.”
